Interview: Chloe Riggs, Windows Support Administrator, UK

Why did you join the technology industry?

I joined the technology Industry because IT was a subject that I always enjoyed and found relatively easy at school. I have always been interested in and kept up with technology, so it only seemed fitting to make it my career.

Who is the person who has inspired you professionally?

My mum, she is the person without a shadow of a doubt who has inspired me both personally and professionally. She is a brilliant example that women can have exceptionally successful careers, as well as a family.

If you could give one piece of advice to your 13 year old self what would it be?

If I could go back and speak to my 13 year old self, I would say that you will be working for a very long time. So do well at school, go to college and complete your A levels, and then go onto university before starting your career.

How do you think we can encourage more women in tech? How do we encourage more women to consider STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers?

I believe that there is still a lot of stereotyping that goes on when people discuss the IT industry. We need to do more to stop the stereotypes and start promoting that not everyone who works in IT is “a geeky male with no social skills.” Every job that I have worked in within the IT industry has always had females in the department, from support engineers, to network specialists and even developers. We really need to try and promote that IT is a rewarding and welcoming career for everyone. It would be amazing to see apprenticeships/Grad Schemes/recruitment drives aimed at women to really try and promote and train/hire women in IT.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is helping people, every day I get to speak to amazing people from all walks of life and help them by fixing the issues they have within their environment. I find this part of my job the most rewarding as I enjoy interacting with people, and being able to make a difference.
